Radiantans or bilateral ones!?

The greatest beauty in nature is symmetry!

In a Sketch of course the symmetry is difficult to maintain!

Most beautiful things in the world are radially symmetrical while more than 99 percent of living beings are actually not Radiantans!

Which brings us to the question what are who are Radiantans? Who are not Radiantans who form the majority?

By the way the ones who are not Radiantans are called Bilaterians! The chief difference is actually also in the way they walk!

Not catwalk by the way but the basic way they move!

So Radiantans or have radial symmetry while Bilaterians have bilateral symmetry!

Radiantans (Radiata) and Bilaterians (Bilateria) exhibit fundamental differences in mobility, largely dictated by their body symmetry and nervous system organization. Radiates are generally adapted for sessile, floating, or slow-moving lifestyles, while Bilaterians are adapted for active, directional movement!

Radiantans have a mobility which is limited, passive, or slow. Examples include jellyfishes (planktonic drifters), sea anemones, and corals!

Radial symmetry allows them to experience the environment equally from all directions, which is advantageous for sedentary organisms waiting for food, but not for chasing prey. Which means that those which have radial symmetry can move in all directions! Whilst those with bilateral symmetry can only move in two directions.

So Bilaterians have motility which is active, rapid, and directional (forward, backward, side-to-side). Examples include worms, insects, and vertebrates which is of course more than 99 percent of movement in the world!

Another interesting thing is that evolutionarily; both the Radiantans and Billaterans had a common evolutionary origin! In fact evolutionarily all were initially Radiantans!

Which essentially means that at some point in life you could go wherever you want but as you evolve you do only two directions! You can either choose to go front or back or you can choose to go up or down!

Whatever you select is your direction! Sometimes of course there is no right direction; it’s only a choice!

Like I choose to sketch Shankar Mahadevan! Really happy with the sketch after a long time!

Now keep your direction towards your bed and sleep!!

Shubh ratri!

The old and new brain!

Have you ever wondered what is your brain?

Luckily if you have wonder that then at least one thing is sure; you have a brain!

But practically what is your brain?

Which part of the brain is the brain? The cortex or the sulcus or even the connections!

It’s a complicated issue for a simple brain!

Then again have you heard of Paul MacLean?

At least you have this much brain to understand that whether you know or not I am going to tell you about him!

At least most important thing about Paul is that he actually thought that the brain is divided into 3 parts! Actually he thought the brain is composed of three different evolutionary regions!

Of course not many accept this theory now but still it is an important part in understanding the development of the brain and human intelligence as such!

Paul MacLean’s Triune Brain theory proposes that the human brain evolved in three distinct stages—reptilian (survival), paleomammalian (emotions), and neomammalian (rational thought)—layered over each other!

While influential for understanding basic behavior, this 1960s model is considered an oversimplification by modern neuroscience, which views brain functions as more integrated and interdependent.

This basically means that while Paul’s theory states that first the older brain developed and then the new  brain developed over it and then the latest brain developed over the older brain; the modern  theory is that the brain development is interdependent and layered over each other and not in separate specific layers!

The key components of the model as suggested by Paul included three definite and separate sections.

The oldest part of the brain is the reptilian complex which includes the modern Basal Ganglia and this Controls autonomic functions, survival instincts, habits, and physical safety.

Then you have the Paleomammalian Complex or the Limbic System which Manages emotions, motivation, fear, and memory.

Finally you have the Neomammalian Complex  or the Neocortex which is Responsible for higher-order thinking, language, planning, and abstract reasoning.

Now you may not have people agreeing with the layer theory of brain it’s still fact that there are regions which are primarily old while there are regions which are primarily new!

So average human brain does have regions which are old and this leads to something called the tricky brain conflict!

Because the new brain can imagine scenarios, it can stimulate the old brain’s fear responses even when no real danger exists. For example, imagining a future failure can trigger intense anxiety, creating a cycle of rumination.

The old brain acts quickly to protect us (e.g., jumping back from a car), while the new brain processes the context. However, these systems can get into a “tussle,” leading to distress, such as when anxiety-driven thoughts (new) trigger emotional reactions (old)

This interplay of the old and the new is of course to protect you! Sometimes  though protection gets inadequate and you get hurt!

There is of course nothing new  about that! I am sure your new brain would have got that pun! While your old brain would have wanted to kick and run away from that joke!

If you are scratching your head then it’s a different kind of luck if you have a head like Saurabh Shukla!

Now stop scratching and give rest to both your old and new brain!

Subh ratri!

Rot a lot!

You know what is brain rot?  Also do you know what is the link rot!?

Both of them end in rot but they are not the same!

Then again if you think about it, they may be close to each other!

Now even link rot is something which is online but a little different… You also have something called a reference rot!

One thing is clear! There are a lot of ROTS online!

So brain rot is a perceived loss of intelligence or critical thinking skills, especially on account of the overconsumption of unchallenging or frivolous content posted online!

In fact excessive social media use can lead to brain rot! Too much reels can ‘reel’ in your brain!

Then you have Link Rot!

Link rot, also known as reference rot or link death, is the phenomenon where hyperlinks become broken, obsolete, or lead to different content over time, often resulting in 404 “page not found” errors.

It significantly impacts research, web, and legal credibility, with studies showing that up to 50% of U.S. Supreme Court opinions and 70% of legal journal links suffer from this issue!

In fact over 25% of all web pages that existed between 2013 and 2023 were inaccessible by late 2023! In fact nearly 54% of Wikipedia pages have at least one broken reference!

Then you have something called the content drift or Reference rot!

While link rot implies the destination is gone, “content drift” (or reference rot) occurs when the link still works, but the content has changed, making it irrelevant or inaccurate to the original citation!

So if it’s online then Rot is near!

Then again if you just want simple fun just watch some Jaspal Bhatti’s comedy!

Clean and intelligent humour!

Now stop all Rots by turning off your phone!

Subh ratri!

World hearing day!

It has always be told that the most precious things are supported by the most strongest things!

You have the strongest vaults in the world for the greatest treasures and you have the most precious thing in the world for you being supported by a very strong bone!

I am of course talking about your brain!

Now did you know that one of the strongest bones in the body actually supports or protects one of the most important organs in the body?

Of course I am biased towards this organ since it is my speciality!

The EAR!

Did you know that one of the strongest bones is the petrous  bone and it protects the cochlea!

In fact the petrous part of the temporal bone is widely recognized as the densest and hardest bone in the human body, specifically designed to protect delicate inner ear structures. Located at the skull base, its extreme, stone-like strength acts as a protective shell for hearing and balance organs!

The cochlea is a fluid-filled, snail-shaped cavity in the inner ear’s temporal bone essential for hearing!

Now listening to the sounds is our routine for some days now and then you have the fact that today is the world hearing day!

The initiative began in 2007 as “International Ear Care Day” following the first International Conference on Prevention and Rehabilitation of Hearing Impairment in Beijing, China.

It was officially renamed World Hearing Day in 2016 to broaden its scope and global impact.

But do you know why this day was chosen?

March 3 (3/3) was chosen because the numbers 3.3 visually resemble the shape of two human ears!

Then again I have heard other specialists telling that it resembles a kidney! Of course we have to see and HEAR what we want to!

As an otologists all I can tell you is that we have two ears so that we can hear or listen more and talk less or sensibly for that matter!

Another challenging day hoping for peace and happiness…
And amazing people like Jamsetji Tata!

Subh ratri…

Free will! Yeah right!

There is a game in which you are supposed to find out what your friend likes or in simple terms how much you know your friend!

A fairly simple game if you think about it but then if you think about it the whole concept of your choice is actually an illusion!

No it is not a concept which I am telling but this is a concept which has been proved by an experiment!

This experiment is often quoted whenever you have discussion of free will! Even Dan Brown finds it interesting!

You think you are making a willful choice but this experiment prove that the brain makes a choice before you just seconds before you actually make your choice!

Intrigued!? Read on!

The experiment is called the Libet Experiment!

Benjamin Libet built on earlier work showing a slow buildup of electrical activity in motor areas of the brain, called the readiness potential (RP), which appears before a voluntary movement.

His main question was whether this preparatory brain activity starts before or after a person becomes consciously aware of deciding to move.

Participants sat in front of a circular clock with a fast-moving spot and were asked to perform a simple, spontaneous movement, typically flexing a finger or wrist, at a time of their own choosing, without prior planning or rhythm.

While they did this, electrodes recorded brain activity (EEG) over motor areas to measure the readiness potential, and the participants later reported the clock position at the instant they first felt the “urge” or “wish” to move, known as time W.

Libet found that the readiness potential in the brain typically began about 550 milliseconds before the actual movement, whereas the reported time W of conscious intention occurred only about 200 milliseconds before the movement!

This meant that neural activity related to initiating the movement started roughly 350 milliseconds before the subject became consciously aware of deciding to move!

Which meant that your brain knew what your decision was before your conscious decision!

Libet interpreted these results as evidence that voluntary actions are initiated unconsciously, with conscious intention arising only after the brain has already begun the process.

However, because there was still a brief interval (around 200 milliseconds) between conscious intention and movement, he argued that consciousness might retain a “veto” power, allowing a person to cancel the action that unconscious processes have initiated!

Of course there are many critics for the experiment and the results of the experiments but the fact still remains that the findings are somethings to be thought about…or did your brain already think about it!

Of course it is a no brainer that Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan is an amazing musician!

Brake and break…

Which part of your vehicle is the most important?

This is the one which you must never take lightly.

The one thing which actually decides how fast you can go!!

It also makes you reach your destination!
If you don’t have this then your journey would never end then again if this fails then your journey may end!

It’s not your engine or your accelerator but it’s your brake!

Brakes keep you safe and the breaks in life keep you grounded!

These little breaks may take some time to heal but when they do your whole body heals!

These breaks and brakes are challenges to make you appreciate life!

Also you must appreciate those who make your life full of melodious music like Ravindra Jain!

A ‘break’ from long blog!

Take a break from monotony!

Be safe
Pray for world peace
Put a brake on war

Pray for innocent peace…

According to this book called Super Mars by Ellis Silver, Geneticists working on the Human Genome Project found 223 “orphan” genes (out of our surprisingly small total of around 20,000 genes) that they can’t explain.

These genes aren’t found in any other species on Earth!

Some researchers believe the aliens may have spliced them into our genomes to help us survive on Earth after their early attempts to rehouse us here failed.

Geneticists have also found scars in our genome where sections of DNA have been added or removed. They’ve also found numerous other anomalies.

This provides us with clear evidence that our genome has been manipulated by external forces!

Though they can be lost quickly, they are found across all life forms, from bacteria to humans!

So even though they are orphans; they are everywhere! Once we find out where they are from and what they do it may be a game changer!

Game changing also were movies starring Innocent!

A quick blog on a challenging day!

Just praying for peace and that’s all…
Shubh ratri…

Being immortal…

What’s the secret of immortality?

No one knows but someone could say that if you do not have heart brain or even bones then you can apparently be immortal!

In fact there is an example of such an organism which is immortal!

No it’s not superman!

It’s jellyfish!

Jellyfish have no brain, heart, bones or eyes.

They are made up of a smooth, bag-like body and tentacles armed with tiny, stinging cells.

These incredible invertebrates use their stinging tentacles to stun or paralyse prey before gobbling it up.

The jellyfish’s mouth is found in the centre of its body!  The ‘immortal’ jellyfish is called  Turritopsis dohrnii!

To date, this is the only species that has been called ‘biologically immortal’!

These small, transparent animals hang out in oceans around the world and can turn back time by reverting to an earlier stage of their life cycle!

So the secret to long life is having no brain, heart, bones or eyes!

Or as in the words of great sages; “no attachments!”.

For now though every human will grow old and wise (that’s not sure though!).

But still the more wrinkles you have means the more wise you are (again not proven!).

You may get hurt and take more time to heal but that’s life!

Life and beautiful colours was the work of

S.G. Neginhal who planted the beautiful flowers all over Bengaluru which makes it so vibrant when they bloom!

A quick blog on a challenging day!

Subh ratri…

The sleepy hit!

This ‘product’ was unoriginal, completely ridiculed and even made fun of by celebrities on live TV!

Even the inventor did not have any faith in it!

When the ad was shown on the TV during the late night it was so ridiculous and tacky!

In fact even the company showed the ad so that Walmart would take notice and give some basic order!

The product was so ridiculed that ironically everyone wanted to buy it!

Even the name of the product was ridiculous and not serious!

It was called the SNUGGIE!

But it became a phenomenon!

Over 30 million units bringing more than 500 million dollars in sales have been recorded by this!

It is just a ridiculous looking blanket with sleeves!

The Snuggie became a massive pop culture phenomenon in late 2008 and 2009 through a combination of relentless, low-cost television advertising, viral social media ridicule, and its positioning as a “kitschy” gift!

Despite not being the first sleeved blanket on the market—it was actually a cheaper alternative to the “Slanket”—the Snuggie brand achieved fame by embracing its own absurdity and utilizing aggressive marketing!

The bizarre nature of the commercial, which featured a “backward robe,” caught the attention of late-night talk show hosts like Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres, who mocked it.

This ridicule backfired (in a good way for the company) by driving viral, organic interest on YouTube, where hundreds of parodies were made, turning it into a “cult” item!

Unlike other companies that might have tried to defend their product’s dignity, Snuggie’s marketing team, led by Scott Boilen, realized that the ridicule was driving sales. They leaned into the joke, making it a popular “gag gift”!

Cultural “Viral” Moments: The Snuggie was cemented into pop culture through high-profile, staged events, such as a “Snuggie Pub Crawl” in Cincinnati and thousands of fans wearing them at Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Angels games to set (and break) world records!

By using the infomercial to build high consumer awareness, Allstar secured prime shelf space at major retailers like Walgreens, CVS, and Bed Bath & Beyond, moving it from a TV-only product to a mass-market staple!

Sometimes the ideas are so bad that they are GOOD!

Then again your timing and sleep is so bad but still your sketch turns out to be good!

I used to like Manmohan Kirshna in the character roles! He used to have an air of innocence!

Shub ratri!

Kuwait and India are friends forever!

Being a very patriotic person who is the son of an Army officer and the Grandson of a freedom fighter; it is very difficult to be away from your country!

But (what is a blog which does not have But!); if you are staying in a country like Kuwait then you will be as close as possible to your home and feel welcome and happy!

Since I have never been a good economist or even a finance person I have believed that the Kuwait currency is one of the highest in the world mainly because the people are so rich in their minds, culture and behavior!

The way they make you feel welcome and treat you with so much kindness and concern is really overwhelming!

The other day I had a flat tyre and I was waiting on the side of the road for the pick up to come! Standing on the side of the clean and wide road I was admiring the view when so many literally stopped their vehicle and asked me if I want water or want to wait in their car since it was a little warm!

Another time I had the same deal with the car and it was in the residential area and the owner of the house nearby came out and asked me if I want to come inside his house and wait for the pick up! When I politely said it is ok; they asked me for water and food!

Even when they come as Patients the do not jump to their problems! They would greet and then ask how I was doing and also genuinely try to learn and enquire about me! Even if he or she was in pain or discomfort!

When they get better they would genuinely wish or bless you! Sometime they would even give you a warm hug!

Then we have our place where we live with so many different people from so many different countries without any issues! Each doing his or her own duties and respecting others!

Whatever you want is always available near you though I love to drive in these beautiful roads where everyone follows the rules and there is no chaos!

In functions we get to meet so many amazing people who may be kings and sheikhs and even princesses and even great dignitaries of many countries but all would be so pleasant cheerful and so humble! The other day I had a patient who was so good and kind in his words and after everything his wife announced that he was the Ambassador of a country!

So all we can do it make our country proud is by being good citizens and expats like the Indian who made the whole anesthesia care a phenomenon by giving his famous classification!

Seshagiri Rao Mallampati!

Living in Kuwait thus has been a joyous and wonderful opportunity for me and my family and on this National Day I would like to wish great prosperity and happiness to this lovely and amazing country!
