Without tossing around too much I will tell you that it is the toss of a COIN!
The history of “Heads or Tails” (the coin toss) dates back to ancient Rome, where it was originally called navia aut caput (“ship or head”). It was used to settle disputes, make everyday decisions, and play games of chance by assigning one choice to the emperor’s portrait and the other to a ship.
In India we have the Chit-Pat (चित-पट)! Chit refers to the face up (head), while Pat refers to the back or flat side (tail)! In official modern Hindi and Sanskrit numismatics, the “head” side is known as Shinha-Mudra, referring to the Lion Capital!
There have been some pretty famous non fictional coin toss though!
In 1845, two early settlers—Asa Lovejoy from Boston and Francis Pettygrove from Portland, Maine—flipped a coin to decide what to name their new settlement in Oregon. Pettygrove won, naming it Portland!
