Pakistan- Courting the Abyss
by Tilak Devasher

Non fiction genre narrating the formation and the current state of Pakistan

Long post ahead with summary of the book; since this is not a suspense thriller there is of course no spoiler. The review is in fact a summary of the book in case you never get around to read it! For those who are going to read the book anyway, this would be a detailed trailer of what to expect!

Disclaimer- Every note by the author has been linked to a valid reference which has been given in the end. In fact the reference and Bibliography forms more than twenty five percent of the book!
So the points mentioned in the review are mere reproduction given in the book and not my own.

Having said that, the conclusions are not secret and the facts are known to one and all but who will bell that cat!

The book is so well researched and written, it feels that you are reading a newspaper and that makes it interesting though there are some basic points which feel like repetition.

Jinnah vs Liaquat ali is the the beginning of the book. The rise of Jinnah from someone who never had a future in his own party the muslim league and even muslim league was not a major player in the country! The world war and quit India movement changed everything when the league found favour with the British and rose in to prominence. After that there was no stopping Jinnah who was actually terminal as revealed later. The formation of Pakistan and the first journey of Jinnnah like a king has been described. In an anti climax; his last journey was alone in a ambulance which broke down half way. The author has done full justice to this section and after Freedom at midnight, this is a good summary. Liaquat Ali who till 1930s was a formidable leader of the Muslim League was relegated into a corner.

The number one thing which formed the country has been the Hatred of hindus and Indians which has been taught and preached all over Pakistan and that is the only common thing which they share since religion is a burning issue. Add to this you have the pasktun issue, the punjab isssue, the issue of Baluchistan and finally Bangladesh- where urdu as a language was promoted with central support which lead to disaster and finally the creation of Bangladesh.

Muhajir who came from India were the chief supporters; then they had clash with original Pakistanis. Till 1970s they got official patronage which changed. So much so that around 3lakh Muhajir who migrated to Bangaladesh during 1947 were not taken back by Pakistan and now they still live in pitiable conditions

The big disparity of Balochistan vs Punjab is a time bomb waiting to explode! Balochistan and Sindh produces the majority of the natural gas production (93 percent) but they get peanuts in terms of funding and support from the government. For many reasons as enumerated by the author, Baloch have come to see insurgency as their last option to defend their homeland from the predatory colonisation by the Punjabi dominated civil and military government in Islamabad.

The situation in KPK Sindh and even in Punjab itself is burning and could explode for different reasons.

Tariq Ali writes about an incident in December 1999, when India had informed Pakistan that one of the peaks in Kargil-Dras was still occupied by Pakistani soldiers, contrary to the ceasefire agreement.
A senior officer went to investigate and ordered the captain in charge of the peak to return to the Pakistani side of the LoC (Line of Control). The captain accused the senior officer and the Military, high command of betraying the Islamist cause and shot the officer dead! The Islamist officer was finally disarmed, tried by a secret court martial and executed! But this is the state of army in Pakistan. Anyone and everyone can be branded as a traitor and punished!

Milbus is a term which refers to military capital that is used for the personal benefit of the military fraternity, especially the office cadre which is not recorded as part of the defense budget. This does not follow the normal accountability procedures of the state, making it an independent genre of capital. So you have a fund which is like a white elephant but you cannot ask or question its use!

Of the role of army in the Constitution; when asked Jinnah who had been listening, patiently raised his finger and said never forget you are the servants of the state and you do not make policies. It is we the people’s representatives and who decide her the country is to be run. Your job is to only obey the decision of your civilian Masters. This was when the country was formed and the army was still in the nascent stage.
Can any politician have the Temerity to say this to an army chief today? The answer according to the author is a resounding no!

The most glaring thing to note is that the civilian leadership in Pakistan has no real control over the country‘s nuclear assets and policy!

The growth of terrorist organizations in Pakistan is the direct result of the support given to them by the state which uses terrorism as an instrument of domestic and foreign policy. Their continued existence is primarily because of the selective approach adopted by the army in dealing with terrorists, targeting some and encouraging others. Resultantly, Pakistan today is perhaps the most radicalized and violent state in the world! And this is not only the author’s commentary but also the comment by US!

Three times the civilian governments had golden opportunity to assert their authority and control over the army which they did not use and paid dearly for it! First was after the loss of Army in the 1971 war, then after the Kargil war and finally when Osama was shot in Pakistani soil! All these times the army bounced back from severe loss and how! Now even if there is a Prime Minister, the army is in control!

The nature of the sectarian conflict has also undergone a change. Till the mid-1990s, sectarian killings targeted leaders and activists of both sects.
Gradually, the killings shifted to those associated with the government: police officers, judges and the likes. By the late 1990s, there was an escalation and ordinary citizens became target because they happened to be Sunni or Shia!
The latest trend is to target professionals among both communities – doctors, lawyers, etc. Meaning there are people ready to kill but there is constant lack of people who can be killed so everyone is a target!

They tend to indoctrinate children to discriminate against non-Muslims, raising children to classify non-Muslims and Muslims outside their
sects as kafirs (infidels), mushrakeen (pagans), dhimmis (non-Muslims), murtids (apostates), and enemies of the state!
As a result, many of these madrasas produce graduates who lack critical and analytical thinking and are intolerant of other sects; graduates who go on to become maulvis who issue irrational fatwas and spew hate speech against minority groups!
Third, there is a huge gap – economic, intellectual and social and lifestyle – between students who graduate from private and government schools and those from the madrasas just as there is a similar gap between those graduating from private schools and government schools.

However, it is not just the Punjab government that has a soft spot for the madrasas. The KPK government, led by Imran Khan’s PTI, has recently allocated Rs 300 million for just one madrasa – the Darul-Uloom-Haggania – which has the dubious distinction of being the alma mater of some of the most dangerous terrorists on international wanted lists! This money exceeds the total budget of the provincial religious affairs ministry!
The justification given was that it was an attempt to ‘mainstream’ the madrasa. However, the head of the madrasa, Maulana Sami-ul-Hag and a known father figure of the Taliban has categorically said the grant was for building school block and nothing else.

The number of Madrassas were around 130 in 1947 and it reached up to 700, 800 in 1980s. While the current official number stands in the range of 20,000 to 35,000. These are the registered Official ones while there is no accounting of the unregistered unofficial ones!

Other problems include education which is subpar to say the least Water shortage and big issues; Islamization of education where they are taught nothing else and each school of Madrassa has its own version of Sharia which they teach claiming theirs to be the original!, Lack of tax is a major issue and this gives rise to the Dependence on foreign investment.

Critical energy shortage is always a major problem in addition to the rampant population growth as evidenced by being the 14th most populous country in the world in 1950 to being the sixth most populous country in the world!

Jihad in Afghanistan- for this purpose, a host of madrasas were set up with the help of Saudi and Gulf money, not only for the Afghan refugees but also for the Pakistani population.
In his enthusiasm for the cause, Zia-ul-Haq encouraged Islamic volunteers from all over the world to train alongside the Afghan mujahideen. These global jihadis were funded by Saudi charities like Rabi-tat al-Alam al-Islami. One such who responded to the call was Osama bin Laden. It is like the start up center for terrorism in the world!
Many of these ‘foreign fighters’ were to stay back after the jihad was over and settle down in FATA, marrying locals and setting the stage for the next episode of Jihad in Afghanistan.

The article and policy towards India hinge on one factor above all else- the desire for parity- military, political and regional! In an honest reminisce the author states about the monster they face. Maybe, just maybe, now is the time to consider that there is something fundamentally wrong with their foundation. Maybe it is time to consider that a nation state that claims religion to be its reason for creation is bound to turn exclusionist. Consider this: they started with Hindu versus Muslim. Then it became Ahmedi versus Muslim. Beyond that, now comes the question of Shia versus Sunni. Next up, and the contours of it are very visible already, will be the question of Barelvi versus Deobandi versus Salafi! It is like you have the hammer ready and now you are simply searching for the nails!

A state married to religion will always play into the hands of people who have a monopoly over interpreting it and will always lead to a divisive and polarized society fueled by different religious interpreters.

More Muslims live in fear in Pakistani than in India and more Muslims have actually been killed on religious and sectarian grounds in Pakistan than in India!

Finally the author gives us opinion similar to the above points of different Pakistani writers as an end note.

The next book in the series will take this journey further.

All in all a well researched book which sheds light in to the Abyss courting Pakistan…

Swayambhu; Poems that simply- EXIST! by Pungidass

Swayambhu; Poems that simply- EXIST! by Pungidass

Rating-4/5

For guys like me the one chief mantra is that we love writing poetry but hate reading them!

Even if its Milton, I would still grab another story since I feel Poems are a vague attempt and the only one who actually understands what he or she is trying to say is the Poet!

So making an exception I picked up my dear friend Pungidass’s collection since I know him to be a person with multiple talents and that would reflect in the poems!

He does not disappoint one bit! The poems are like his mind! Some of them so simple that you would think it is a passing thought (or is it?!) while some are longer and need your concentration to understand.

Some poems start with such a high degree of philosophical undertone that they pique your attention and then suddenly it ends with a simple explanation like the mobile phone poem which is the best one!

Then some poems take the viewpoint of third person or even an insect like an ant or a mosquito!

Some poems are longer though most are within the page and rarely two; one poem is simply one line long! It called You (You are not a Bouquet but a garden of flowers!); yes that is the whole poem!

In one poem with all seriousness he talks about things we don not talk about like literally the things we do not talk about! Or a note about a Guru in Himalaya or about a beautiful man or even meeting the crows! While in the next he tells his goodbye to the bedsheet!

Poet Pungidasa is also a poem in the book and that is also nice to read! A myriad of emotions and all you need is a light simple mind to read and make your own assumptions! There is a poem n women with all the words starting with the letter W!

According to Poet Pungidass, Tomorrow it shall get better if you Gather men for peace! In a typical twist, the last poem is a foreword!

He ends it with a description about himself and links to his different works!

All in all when a person like me who steers clear of any poem liked them, I am sure anyone else who enjoys poetry would do too!

Doctor is your friend and your friend is a doctor!

Doctor is your friend and your friend is a doctor!

Long post alert! Please bear with me!

These are some personal experiences which have been generalized; I am sure that many of my doctor friends would have faced similar experiences.

Most of the times since lets say a doctor is a specialist with expertise in one area; and gets patients who have been seen by other doctors and treated for the same until the treatment either does not work or the doubts from the patient is increased!

When such a patient comes to him or her; they usually click bait telling him or her that the other doctor did not treat properly! Or his or her charges and fees are more (or sometimes less!)

This happens too often in private practice and also when patients go to government hospital and then consult you!

I have seen doctors announcing grandly how the other doctor got the diagnosis wrong and in this rat race world; it is a common issue! or Proclaiming that his or her treatment modality is wrong!

There has been a old saying going around for a long time, ‘No two doctors would ever agree on a common diagnosis or a mode of treatment!’

It does not help that there are too many options now for both doctors and for treatment modality!

Added to that there is also a huge pressure to keep everyone happy!

But in the quest of all this; a single comment from any doctor can put the whole medical community in jeopardy!

This has already happened in all parts of the world and the faith which patients have or had on doctors is reducing day by day.

There were times when just a single opinion from your friendly neighborhood GP would solve all your doubts and now even the recommendations from the topmost doctor of the biggest hospital of your area is seen or treated with mistrust.

Of course the return of faith of patients to doctors is a long way now, but what we doctors can do is at least not put down our own brethren.
Coming back to the patients referred to the specialist; Just read these three small incidents

The other day the doctor saw a patient referred by a senior pediatrician who informed the patient that he has polyps in the nose while on examination he knew that they are something called the Inferior turbinate Hypertrophy which are normal structures and treatable by medication. He explained to the patient that it is a Polypoidal mass only and that the doctor was right in finding it and sending him to me! He could have easily announced that he or she is wrong (which was his first primal instinct)! Then he saw that he or she did not do any wrong intervention or give any medication which was harmful to the kid. In fact most of the treatment for both is similar.

It is the same with ear wax or something within the ear; So many times we receive referrals after the start of an ear drop which was either not necessary or incorrect. But most ear drops are safe; they do have immediate calming and analgesic effect and most are sterile. So all we do is gently tell them to stop the drops and continue with our treatment. Even in the case of foreign body in the nose or the ear sometimes the first doctor manipulates and the whole field is full of either blood or secretions. Even then we give some medications for the temporary relief and make a point to state that in emergency it does not matter and the first treating doctor had only immediate relief of the patient in mind. Finally the nose cavity or the ear drum can be healed. We can manage any complications in the long run so no need to worry!

In the giddiness management; the most common cause is BPPV where the management is a simple positional maneuver and not medication. The medication also would almost always be under prescribed or incorrect dose. Since the medications are usually under dosed; it really does not make any difference and we simply say that we would be giving the same medications but in a different dose. We would also add that the doctor would have started a lower safe dose initially and now we can start the actual higher dose!

This can happen to any doctor like if the said doctor refers the patient for a physician or cardiology consultation when he finds something in the ECG!
Now these three are only simple examples on how we can still change the treatment and not put the previous doctor at fault since there are two basic principles which we must follow!

One is that anyone and everyone can make mistake; However good or knowledgeable the doctor or surgeon is! My chief used to say that if you do not have failure in your surgeries then it means that you have not done enough surgeries!

Second and most important is the law of Karma! Your patient may still go on to another doctor or you may have to refer a patient to another doctor. At that time you would want that doctor to give you the respect you gave to the previous doctor!

More important is that nowadays even if the patient has come to you for a second opinion; it is not necessary that he or she has come to you for a different opinion! You can still agree with the previous doctor and the patient will have a healthy respect for you! I am sure that most patients would not want one doctor cursing or blaming another doctor in the long run! If you do not agree with the doctor you can still tell that there are different options and no options is wrong!

I have so many patients who come to be with proper complains against another doctor but even then I try to support my brother or sister however strong my feelings are. I would tell how at that particular time, the doctors decision or recommendations would have been apt which is true most of the times!

Of course that does not mean you support gross proven negligence of a doctor in which case, I would simply not comment since I am not in a position to do so anyway. Even then everyone must remember that even doctors are human and they make mistakes! The only difference in most cases is that the mistakes of the doctor haunts the doctor and the patient for life!

I would encourage my colleagues to think about a few points before commenting against another doctor.

You do not know the condition or the situation of the patient or the doctor at the time of diagnosis or the findings. So instead of informing the patient that the diagnosis is wrong you can very well say that it was only the initial diagnosis and of course it can change after further test and examination. I still remember how a patient with sinusitis diagnosed and treated by me wrote on a public platform that my diagnosis is wrong and that he had teeth infection! I informed him that he can have both! But by that time the damage had been done since the comment was placed after giving negative rating!

In the days of rating; it is even more important to be very careful on what you comment to the patient.

When it comes to different options such as a new medication or whether surgery is indicated or not you can give options to the patient with pros and cons of each option since even the best modality of treatment has its positives and negatives and in modern medicine sometimes the treatment is not right or wrong but only a choice made at that time.

Most important is to avoid silly statements like, “You have got a wrong treatment or diagnosis” or “Your treatment was started late” or “It was diagnosed late” or “This test should not have been done!” or “this test should have been done!”

As far as tests are concerned; every test can either be done or not! It all depends on the situation! If you think a particular test must have been done by the doctor before then why cant you think that the doctor did not want to burden the patient with additional tests! There are still doctors like me who would like to think that a good clinical history and examination is most of the times enough to reach a diagnosis rather than a battery of unnecessary test!

Of course the opposite is also true when you see a patient who has undergone all possible test and now feels that the doctor has done unnecessary test!
I remember Edison’s statement here, “I have not failed 10,000 times—I’ve successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.”

So I simply tell the patient the truth, “one more normal test will put your mind at ease that’s all!, it does you no harm and you have the additional benefit to know that you are more sure or healthier by one more test!”

When you get a case from your juniors with some error then try not to point out the error to the patient or make a big deal out of it; you can still make it positive in such a way that in spite of being a junior the doctor has made some right choices in terms of treatment or diagnosis. Remember you were a junior at one point of your practice too!

When you get a patient seen from your senior with old school or thoughts or old modalities of treatment you do not have belittle his or her experience but can gently mention that he or she is an experienced doctor and of course now we have some more options as smoothly as possible without sounding arrogant or insulting since remember that you will one day be someone’s senior!

The most common attitude problems I see is the way specialists and seniors treat the general practitioner and the Physicians who see the patient initially. Do not forget that the bulk of the patients are seen by them and for them to diagnose and treat your area is an added bonus. In spite of that they are kind enough to refer them to you!

I still remember how my Chief used to write personal letter of gratitude to the most simplest and junior most of the doctors just for the simple reason that he or she had referred the patient to him!

Finally I would like to remind both the doctor and the patient reading this; in the end both the doctor and the patient would always want the patient to get better. No doctor would ever want the patient to worsen. Only when the patient is happy can the doctor ever be happy!

The biggest happiness for a doctor is when the patient comes back and says that he or she is better with the doctor’s treatment! That is the only primary reason every doctor gets up in the morning to go to his or her work place!
Reading this I hope one doctor would make his or her brother or sister feel good about himself or herself tomorrow!

Just like how only a diamond can cut another diamond; only a doctor’s words can cut another doctor’s reputation…

The firm by John Grisham

The firm by John Grisham

This is not a book review but a summary of the famous book and also how it is different from the movie
This is because John has decided to release a sequel to the book, and this is time to be prepared on the premise of the book!

So if you are planning to read the book again yourself or watch the movie in the future then stop reading since spoilers abound!

It is interesting to note that this book was written in the year 1991 and released during the time so in all probability, people have to navigate the book at least 20-25 years back and since I have made the effort of reading this book again, I thought I would save your time by giving a summary of the book!
As an added bonus, I will also give a summary of the movie based on this book though the sequel is supposed to be based on the book and not movie!

It is interesting to note that the movie and the book follow each other very closely in the first half
There is a big deviation in the middle and the end is completely different in both

Some minor differences are there, even in the starting but then that’s creative liberty! Like Mitch getting a Mercedes in the movie instead of BMW in the book!

So the basic summary is that Mitch is a graduate from Harvard who gets into a firm who give amazing starting salary and bonus and joining car! Even before he clears the bar! While employed he is pampered with bonuses and the firm even takes care of his loan! They even give him and his wife a low mortgage house! Then with the busy hours he puts in they pile him on with work and he gives them the satisfaction of doing it much better than they hope! They even give him training to pass the Bar which he does with flying colors! Then you have the lavish parties and trips to the exotic places in style and then after some time a contact from the FBI burst the bubble!
Mitch finds out that the firm is actually a front for money laundering for the Mafia! Now he faces the big dilemma of becoming the whistle blower and losing his license to practice forever leaving in fear of Mafia or he keeps quiet and becomes part of the evil and one day gets arrested as an accomplice! The devil’s alternative indeed! The firm bugs his house and also does a honey trap on him so that he will remain with them while FBI constantly reminds him of the right thing to do especially since many lawyers who joined the firm have been found dead under mysterious circumstances .
Mitch also has a brother in Jail (Ray) who desperately needs a get out of jail card and he also hires Ray’s friend, a detective for doing some investigation which gets him killed. The good outcome of that though is that he reaches a decision on what has to be done and also gets the detective’s girlfriend to help him which becomes his best source of evidence collection and support! There is a leak in the FBI and that Ray gets released becomes public news. Mitch then has to collect his initial fee and run!

This is the first half and a little more of the book and the movie; from here the book and the movie takes big turns!

In the book they have not shown Mitch to confess while in movie it is a big show! The “did I lose you” scene is very popular even now!

The movie also gives more importance to the role played by Gene Hackman including a scene where Abby seduces him in the end and he plays an important role there. He also confesses to Abby how the firm Honey Traps recruits. There is no scene like this in the book.

The movie also gives more importance to Ed Harris or Wayne Tarrance but in the book he gets fooled by Mitch and how!

There is a whole chase and escape from assassin scene in the movie where Tom Cruise as Mitch cleverly gets rid of one assassin by another using his briefcase! There is also scenes involving train and meeting the mob directly. There is no scene like that in the book.

So in the book, Mitch collects the evidence, gets 1 million, gets Ray out and makes him escape using his friend. Then they all meet in some hotel and Mitch further steals around 10 million from the firm and distributes it generously! They all then just manage to kill one guy in self defense and escape to exotic islands and live in anonymity! The chief difference is that he is on the run from both FBI and the mob. Though his work and evidence leads to the indictment and trial of the firm eventually. But since he gives out client evidence, he cannot practice the law! What happens in the sequel is awaited!

The movie has a much better ending! He finally goes back to the firm and tells the owner and mob that they have been over billed! That scene is simply super and brings out the Tom Cruise of Jerry Maguire! He then states that whatever other dealings they are doing are safe with him even if he leaves the firm in accordance with the lawyer client privilege. They let him go, and then the files given to FBI will make them get the firm under lesser charges but it is a start! He gets to practice law!

Since everything is settled in the movie, but everything is open ended in the book, it is understandable that John is Bringing out a sequel! Waiting for that and also hoping that it is a sequel worth making a movie with Tom once again since he is now the king of sequels!

Enjoy the firm firmly!

Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz

Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz

Ebook/ Audiobook with a new introduction by Matt Furey (The president of the Psycho-Cybernetics foundation)
Rating; This book is one of the top self help non fiction books which does not need any rating!

The running length is around 14 hours or so which can be reduced by increasing the narration speed to around 1.3 (This is actually recommended since there was a section which I played via my watch in the normal speed and it was so boring and deliberately slow!)

This is apparently one of the most successful self help books! (when I was writing this, I remember writing the same for many books like Habit of highly effective people, Atomic Habits and so many more!).

I think this just goes to prove that there are many self help books, most will find some sizeable audience, many people need help and most importantly if you need help in your life especially in making money then write a self-help book!

Cybernetics (loosely translated from the Greek): “a helmsman who steers his ship to port.” Psycho-Cybernetics is a term modified by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, means, “steering your mind to a productive, useful goal so you can reach the greatest port in the world, peace of mind.”

In this very popular book, Maxwell who is a plastic surgeon by profession states how the strongest computer in the world that is our brain has the power within and we have to unleash it somehow! How you can bear pain without anesthesia if your mind is powerful enough! How what you feel is actually the power of your brain and nothing else! Maxwell was a great surgeon and a researcher and this is a must read book!

Now people who are reading this and especially people who need help must understand that the above statement is a joke!

Maxwell Malt is a plastic surgeon who during his work on patients who were not happy with the way they used to look before surgery were still not either confident or convinced of the fact that the surgery has changed his or her appearance! Then he understood that unless he changes them internally, he would not be able to bring about any change externally!
The book is told in parts by Maxwell Maltz and Matt fury; the latter is the president of Psycho-cybernetics foundation and a professional trainer and a well established author himself. There are different updates of the book and all are successful.

The crux of the book is that traditionally what we call the “subconscious mind” isn’t a “mind” but a cybernetic mechanism built on our nervous system! So by a series of exercise and thought process you can condition your mind to do stuffs which includes getting success or feeling good about yourself!

With intermittent narration by both the narrators; it is a thrilling ride of inspiration and positivity !

You start believing that you can do something once you put your mind into it!
Some of the exercises have been placed in such a way that you get a break and think about it. This book is the first in a series and apparently there are more with specific exercises to make you gain your confidence.

The whole idea is inspired by Norbert Wiener’s book called the Cybernetics which describes both animals and the self guided missiles he helped develop in WWII as goal seeking mechanisms.

So Maltz postulates that there’s a mechanism which accepts a goal and has a self correction and some form of memory.

Maxwell Maltz found that his plastic surgery patients often had expectations that were not satisfied by the surgery, so he pursued a means of helping them set the goal of a positive outcome through visualization of that positive outcome. He says how patients thinking that surgery will solve their problems is an example of the XY problem. He specified techniques to develop a positive inner goal as a means of developing a positive outer goal. This concentration on inner attitudes is essential to his approach, as he believes that a person’s outer success can never rise above the one visualized internally.

In one section he states how physical scars are formed because the wound heals under tension and the gap between the wounds is filled by fibrous tissue! A plastic surgeon ensures that there is no tension which makes the scars less or none! In the same way apparently even emotional scars develop when there is stress and tension or frustration! According to him the best way to heal or repair those scars is to reduce emotional stress or tension!

The hypothetical measure of an individual’s capacity to resist stress is adaptation energy according to Maxwell. It is like each person is believed to have a finite amount of adaptation energy, which is used to cope with different types of stress. Energy expended to cope with one type of stress, such as staying up late, results in less being available for other stresses, such as training. When adaptation energy is low, a person is more likely to suffer from stress-related diseases and conditions known as burnout and rundown!

With these and many more excerpts and suggestions and basically the book is a booster for your mind and body and it works wonders! Some of the works are said to be magical according to the author!

Of course this is a reference book with constant read back and updation and I am sure the subsequent books will up the ante so to speak!

Had a positive energy while reading it and I hope you feel it too!

Mythos by Stephen Fry

Mythos by Stephen Fry

Audiobook

Narrated delightfully by Stephen Fry!

Running length of around 15 hours but reduced by increasing the speed of narration without any change in diction or meaning!

It was an absolute delight to listen to Stephen Fry narrating the stories of the Greek Mythology! He gets into the characters and makes a lovely presentation!
The big book with its very interesting stories fill you up with joy and delight!
Most of the stories are known of course but Stephen has tried to add chronology to the story and this brings about a much needed order of things! He himself states in the end how this is only his attempt to add continuity to the stories and this makes it really easy to follow the chain of thoughts and flow of stories.

So the story begins with Chronos and then later on the new king of Gods; Zeus takes over and most part of the book are the stories involving Zeus and his escapades and his adventures! And how his extra marital adventures gives rise to so many great characters and how his jealous wife Hera takes revenge on the hapless victims of Zeus’s adventures!
There is a dialogue in the popular Hindi movie called PK; the hero says, “Your God is just like you! He gets jealous, he gives faster to rich and he gets angry!”
The book also follows the same theme! Just like humans they compete with each other, they get jealous, fall for their temptations, punish for small mistakes, don’t accept criticism of any kind and use their powers without thoughts!
The amount of sexual escapades and stories would give the script writer of Game of Thrones a run for his money!
Some stories are told in detail and some are narrated in a swift way! More or less the story is of the misadventure of a God or the Punishment of the mortal!
Curses flow around like sand in a desert!
People and Gods alike in this book are so vain and have no afterthought!
Stephen fry has made an earnest attempt to give us an entertaining extravaganza and he states his sources and of course in effect the source of the original stories which could be from places as far as India or China! Or even Africa! You can see the similarities in stories told to us in different forms in other religious books also.

This is not a religious book but just a compilation of the famous stories although many more stories are left out! I was eagerly waiting for Hercules and other stories but as Stephen mentioned that would have made the book so heavy that even Atlas would not be able to lift!
You have Stories about Zeus, Aries, Atlas, Hermes, Athena, Hera, Poseidon, Chronos, Aphrodite, Pandora and Midas! And many many more thrown in for good measure!
You also have lots of origin stories of so many names and so many animals or birds or flowers or trees and how they had that particular property! Those are the most interesting stories!
How Honey was discovered is also amazing and then abruptly it becomes a tragedy! The temper of Greek Gods is shorter than…their patience!

It’s a thoroughly enjoyable adventure with the quick wit of Stephen fry! You will not realise the time flying by just like Hermes!

The boys from Biloxi by John Grisham

The boys from Biloxi by John Grisham

Legal Dramatic thriller

Ebook

Rating 4/5 overall; one of his best works!

John has been gearing up! A time for Mercy or the Litigators or the recent sparring partner were like stepping stones to go back to the John of The Runaway Jury and A Time to Kill!

The novel starts like a script of movies such as City of Gods! How immigrants come to a place and how a place develops. The development of bars and casinos and finally of a mafia lord!
And how on the other side you have another immigrant getting on the right side of law and becoming a lawyer!
One side slowly going into crime while the other going into law!
The story is chiefly of the second and third generation. Lance Marco who plays the undisputed king of the land and Jesse the honest lawyer who takes him on!
The next generation is Kieth and Hugh who both used to play together and were school friends and colleagues in the beginning.

In fact both of generations were actually friends and acquaintances in the beginning but when the fight begins then there is no looking back!

In a battle and game of cats and dogs, wins and loses; you are treated to an epic showdown first between the second generation and then the third!
The setting of the novel is not of the recent time so the idea of education and making money is more or less in opposition! You can be either educated and poor or rich! At least that’s how it’s shown in the novel!
The biggest factor which storms and changes the whole equation literally is a big storm! Reminiscent of the Camino winds novel and may show a personal connection of the author am sure!

In novels like these you clearly know the side you have to root for! There’s always a good and a bad with lines clearly drawn! That may be another reason why John placed this novel in this time period! A current novel can never delineate between good and bad! Nowadays everything is grey! Everyone can be good or bad as per the situation!

That and the ending where you are treated with the satisfaction that Crime does not pay makes you wish for those good times (at least in a novel!)

Of course it’s Grisham and that means court and lawyers figure prominently in the story and story line! In the novel though the lawyers and the judge and the whole court system has been shown to be so good! I guess at least in a fictional society or novel; you can write what you wish is true and be optimistic! The cops and and local police has shown to be corrupt to the core though! And the Federal Police and other police is on the good side! Again; clear demarcation!

The story flows like a soap opera script and brings back the days of Sidney Sheldon and his extremely enjoyable and entertaining novels!

The boy is back! And how!

Ebook review

Fictional thriller

A collection of three independent stories

Rating 4/5 overall but 3/5 for the open endings!

All three stories are independent of each other and of different people

While the first story happens in the universe of Jack of A time to kill and A time for mercy who gets a letter from another lawyer who take some settlement money and skips town! The surprising thing here is that most lawyers apparently have this thought at the back of their minds!
It’s like the banker or cashier who handle so much cash and one fine day give in to temptation and scoot! How that lawyer comes back is the crux of the story.

The second story is of a convict awaiting the final verdict and exhausting all his appeals and waiting to be punished. The things that goes in his mind and the things he does has been told really well. Till you know the full story you don’t feel any sympathy for him but the full story in the end makes you wonder. The open ending keeps the hope alive I guess…

The final and the best story is about the sparring partners! Two brothers who are both lawyers against their father who is a lawyer in prison for charge of murder of his wife! There is no good lawyer in this whole story! Each one more corrupt and cruel and ready to do anything to save his skin in this one! This one teaches the lesson that you just can’t trust anyone! And also that you need to treat your juniors and subordinates well! Especially those who handle your money or who know your secrets! And be aware of those whom you have wronged! This story has a partial closure but still needs some more!

All in all when you read three short stories, you finish a complete novel! All in a day’s time!
Of course you feel compelled to finish one story the moment you start it which makes it difficult sometimes!

Rich dad Poor dad by Robert T Kiyosaki Narrated by Tim Wheeler

Rich dad Poor dad by Robert T Kiyosaki Narrated by Tim Wheeler

A part of the Rich dad series; the first and the best and the most popular book in the series.

Audio book of running length of around 6 hours

Rating 4/5

Non fictional investment reference book with an introduction to how to save invest and make money!

How poor work for money and how rich make the money work for them! How they speak; how they tell that I cannot afford it instead of how can I afford it!

Every investor worth his or her salt would have read this book and followed the guidelines at least to some extent. This is one of the few books on investment which does not beat around the bush and makes an open claim of earning money as much as possible!
The author is also a straight in his approach and does not mind calling his actual dad poor while mentioning the father of his friend his own Rich dad!

When I first read this book as an e-Book I was a young unmarried man who adored his father and for me to listen to someone praise someone else’s father and write a book on that was blasphemy! I am sure that even though the author has made the title like this only so that the book will sell (he mentions in the novel that he himself is not a good writer but his aim is to become the best selling writer so these names garner attention!); his actual dad would feel a little let down.

With constant push from the audible loading page, I then got this audio book and the second listen is much better! Though you and me may not agree to the book as a whole, there are multiple valid points about school education system; about the rat race, about the 9 to 5 job, about how the government will take your tax even before you get your pay and so on!
Robert is a graduate and a pilot and a good salesman in Xerox initially and with these actions he took care of his poor but well educated dad’s wishes and then by investing and understanding how money works for you, he follows his rich dad!

He gives you tips on real estates, on stocks on buying or investing in good start ups! His stories on how he turns a small amount into millions is like magic!
He constantly states how he has no respect for the school system which does not teach the financial knowledge and being a model tax paying citizen is actually being a poor investor!
He talks properly about assets and liabilities and this is one book which does not beat around the bush as far as the classification is concerned!
He talks about the seven or so secrets of getting rich or how the rich people get rich. It is like reading another version of the habits of rich people. How every time he has to buy something, he would first invest and then buy it with the profits.

I full agree on the way he says that the Robin Hood mentality must go! This was like Atlas Shrugged once again! You cannot penalise the rich! If you try to tax the rich they will escape and finally the middle class will get the brunt of taxes!
The middle class always suffers the most! They work so hard to not get poor and the tax and non productive work doesn’t allow them to become rich!

In fact rich people make a country developed while the gap between rich and poor make it under developed! And the only way to go is to make the middle class rich!

His schemes are mostly to earn money with risk and having an aptitude for it and to avoid paying as much taxes as possible. How to buy when the market is down which is actually the best time to buy! He tells of multiple such stories and they are sound so good to listen!
He does not care much for safe investments like fixed deposits or mutual funds or listening to your neighbor!

This is one book of investment which you must read if you are serious about investment and to make money and is like a bible to many in the financial world especially with lines like Mc Donalds is not a Burger company but a real estate company! He speaks highly of Warren Buffet and even Donald Trump!
Of course he also gives an introduction to the next book in the series and also about his game which is apparently costly but worth it!
So following his own advice, you want to earn money then you must spend it first!

This is an amazing book but having said that; with the amount of money the author has supposedly earned; I always think; when will it end!? Every time you want to spend money you have to first think; how will I get it back or what is my return of investment!? That may not be everyone’s cup of tea!

I am sure his last book in his white years would be; Poor dad was right all along! Money will get you the coziest bed, but can it get you the sleep!?…
