Do you know what is a TURNITIN score?
In the era of AI; it is a very important score which actually makes your work your own!
A score you assess before you turn in your paper or assignment!

I don’t think much time has been spent in naming the score though!
Anyway the score which is officially a Turnitin score and also called a similarity score is the percentage of text in a submitted paper that matches existing sources within Turnitin’s database!
It is a tool used to track textual overlap, not a direct measure of plagiarism or cheating!
Then you must also first know about the Turnitin’s database!
So apparently the Turnitin database is a massive repository of digital text used to check student papers for similarity against existing sources.
The database contains current & Archived Web Pages along with billions of active and historical internet pages, blogs, and public articles!
It also has millions of essays, theses, and assignments previously submitted to Turnitin by students worldwide!
The database also has Academic journals, periodicals, books, encyclopedias, and subscription-based research databases!
So when a paper is submitted, Turnitin breaks the text down and compares it against these three categories. If your school has the global database enabled, your paper may be saved into this repository to protect your work from being copied by other students in the future.
The score as such is color coded into five distinct color bands:
Blue which is around 0% which means that No matching text found
Green is usually 1 word to 24% and like all GREEN everywhere, is the standard normal range; usually standard citations and common phrases!
Then you have the Yellow which is 25% to 49% or Moderate overlap which might require closer review or better paraphrasing
Then you have Orange which is 50% to 74% which shows High overlap which is likely to contain heavy quoting or unoriginal text!
Finally like the traffic signal you have the RED! Which is 75% to 100%! This is Severe overlap and indicates that nearly the entire paper matches external sources!
Now you must also understand that there is no “perfect” score and most universities consider 10% to 20% acceptable, but there is no universal threshold!
The context is critical which means that even a 30% score can be completely acceptable if it consists of properly cited direct quotes, standard templates, or legal definitions!
Like this BLOG and many blogs with technical terms may have a high TURNITIN score since the technical aspects has to be the SAME! You cannot CREATE a new TECHNICAL definition!
But the phrasing in between must be completely yours to get a good score and acceptance!
Now many Turnitin reports also include a separate AI writing indicator. This uses a different tracking system to calculate the percentage of text likely to be written by the AI!
So if you are applying to a university and need to submit an essay or a paper; do check your TURNITIN score first; before you TURN IT IN!
Or use your co pilot in windows to have a check! You obviously cannot ask Satya Narayana Nadella right!
