Do you know what is or are MYCIN?
There are two different MYCIN! The first is known to all medical professionals while the second is or was engineered for medical professionals!
MYCIN in names of antibiotic compounds derived chiefly from fungi such as Erythromycin (macrolide), Gentamicin, Neomycin, Streptomycin, and Tobramycin (aminoglycosides)
Most medical professionals would have used them in some for or way at some point!
Then you have the almost AI MYCIN!
This MYCIN was an influential 1970s rule-based expert system developed at Stanford University to diagnose bacterial infections and recommend antibiotics!
It used to utilize ~600 production rules and backward chaining, it achieved, in tests, a ~70% accuracy rate, often outperforming specialists, while providing explainable AI (XAI) to justify its diagnosis!
It was designed to help physicians identify bacteria causing severe infections (such as bacteremia and meningitis) and select appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
MYCIN used a backward-chaining inference engine to process knowledge, operating via a series of yes/no or simple questions for the user.
It stored knowledge using IF-THEN production rules, a structure that separated domain-specific knowledge from inference procedures.
It ALSO managed uncertainty in medical diagnosis by assigning confidence scores to potential diagnoses.
A significant feature was its ability to explain its reasoning, allowing physicians to ask “why” a question was asked or “how” a conclusion was reached.
Then again although it performed well in trials, MYCIN was never adopted in clinical practice due to issues surrounding legal liability, cost-effectiveness, and user interface limitations, but it paved the way for future rule-based systems.
Its underlying framework led to the development of “EMYCIN” (Essential MYCIN)
In fact EMYCIN is widely considered one of the first “expert system shells,” popularizing the idea of separating the reasoning engine from the domain knowledge!
We professionals of course use guidelines and clinical skills to prescribe antibiotics now! So unless you have the original MYCIN code; Do not self medicate!
