Altruism peak…

The other day I read about Dr. Thankam Subramanian, a 58-year-old fetal medicine consultant at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road in Bengaluru, gained widespread recognition for her altruistic act of donating her kidney to a stranger!

She fought a decade-long journey, including a High Court legal battle, to obtain permission for the donation, as Indian law heavily scrutinizes organ transplants between unrelated individuals to prevent commercial trade!

Her primary goal was to raise awareness about altruistic living organ donation and inspire more people in India to consider the gift of life!

It was an inspiring post and deservedly so! In this day and age; ” you may not even donate CHUTNEY to someone you know! Who would donate a Kidney so selflessly!”

That too a donation done by a DOCTOR TO THE PATIENT! Most important here is that the Patient is not even related to the doctor!
Apart from a mother child relationship; if there was ever a true example of ALTRUISM then this is it!

But (You expect a BUT in my blog!); the act is very scary and frankly terrifying for doctors all over the world! The act would now be the new PROTOTYPE of a GOOD DOCTOR!

Imagine your duty time is over and you stop the OP and try to get home; and then a patient would walk in half hour late for his appointment and demand you to stay! He would say, “There is a doctor who gave her kidney to a stranger! You cannot even wait for a couple of minutes for one!” Little does he or she know that your own child is unwell and needs your attention!

The previous terror was the 5 Rupees doctor! The moment the bill is high you used to get the standard, “there is a doctor who charges only 5 rupees and your hospital bill is hundred times that!” Little does he or she know that most if it goes to the hospital and your children’s fees has to be paid!

However this does NOT BELITTLE Dr. Thankam Subramanian’s actions in any way! She is now a legend! But she is an exception! Do expect your doctor to treat you in the best possible way wishing you get healthy (and wealthy!) but DO NOT expect every other DOCTOR to DONATE his or her kidney to be called a GOOD doctor!

You can do your bit and that is still ok! Every doctor I know does some kind of service which is mostly silent! In fact I myself am a part of a group of doctors who routinely do free camps on their free day! It is a great thing if you consider the fact that already most have busy routine days and the only day they get a break, they do not think twice to jump into service! Just do not ask us for the kidney!

Remember that the aim of the doctor above is to spread awareness about live donation.

Then again I am really proud that Dr. Thankam Subramanian walked the talk! Her heart and soul is real THANKAM or GOLD indeed!

A direct blog after a long time! No beating around the bush!

Shubh ratri…
