When we look at the static unchanging sun we think that it’s there forever but actually it does change though it takes a million years and we may not be there to see it! Don’t feel bad!
The brevity of life is told by the example of the may fly!
For those who know what is Brevity but little confused (like me!)
The brevity of life refers to the short and finite nature of human existence. It highlights the idea that life is temporary and fleeting, with a definite beginning and end. This concept is often used to emphasize the importance of making the most of the time we have!
So you must know that the may fly has a pretty interesting life and life span! It spends years and years as a baby and then has just one to two days as an adult!
That is actually for the males! For the females it may be even less than five minutes sometimes! In that short time they have to find a partner and then lay eggs and well, pass off!
The male has a couple of days for the inevitable!
Now as expected, the male does not waste a single minute of his life!
He just enjoys every second!
With such a simple and profound philosophy it is no wonder that the may fly gets mentioned by poets and writers alike!
The earliest reference to mayflies in the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was written in Mesopotamia between around 2100 and 1200 BC. The short life of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, is conveyed through the image of a dying mayfly: “Ever the river has risen and brought us the flood, the mayfly floating on the water. On the face of the sun its countenance gazes, then all of a sudden nothing is there”.
In fact even Aristotle said there is a kind of insect near the river Hypanis…whose life consists but of one day…Compare our longest life with eternity, and we shall be found almost as short-lived as those little animals”.
The final implication is that even though the life of a may fly is short when we compare it with humans or other species, they still live life to the fullest! Then again within the short span the average may fly accomplishes everything he or she wants in life! Another amazing fact is that the may fly remains a baby for a long time! It is an adult only for a short while and that too towards the end of its life!
Which means that you can be childlike and live long! The moment you become serious and adult, the timer begins! Which means that if you want to have a long life then be a child! Then again, what would a fly know! May know! May fly!
Childlike and a person with amazing compassion and soul was also Judge Frank Caprio!
Used to love watching his videos of swift and proper justice! Very few judges in the world who simply rocked!
He will be missed!
Heart felt condolences…
