Zeroing on to India!

“I may be round but I can make you small!
Course if you Respect me then you can be tall!
Add me in front and twil be a great fall!
I am zero! Beware of me you all!”

Do you know the contribution of India to Mathematics is literally and practically; ZERO!

Now do not think too much!

We are the inventors of the number which can make you a prince or a pauper with just its position! The ZERO!

read on!

Mathematics and india and kids simply gel together!

Mathematics is a subject of divine quality is my take! Everything is so perfect!

One of the few areas where you have an absolute! There may be so many different ways to reach the solution but there is only one answer!

It is like SARVA DEVA Namaskaram…which means that you can pray to so many or any gods but the final prayer reaches the ONE!

Another amazing character of Mathematics is the fact that you can immediately tell how much you are going to score in any examination!

While studying, when I used to feel sleepy, I used to solve some mathematical equations and the joy of seeing the solution used to make me so happy and of course awake!

Of course since I never pursued engineering examinations, Mathematics was only simple and a joy! I am sure if it was a compulsion, it would have been not so tolerable!

I used to love finding the X! Specially since I never had one!

But remember that the whole symbols and numericals we use all over the world today are Indian origin! They are so unique and efficient so much so that even computers used the same numericals!

In the classical period of Indian mathematics important contributions were made by scholars like Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara II, Varāhamihira, and Madhava.
The decimal number system in use today was first recorded in Indian mathematics!

Ancient and medieval Indian mathematical works, all composed in Sanskrit, usually consisted of a section of sutras in which a set of rules or problems were stated with great economy in verse in order to aid memorization by a student.

This was followed by a second section consisting of a prose commentary (sometimes multiple commentaries by different scholars) that explained the problem in more detail and provided justification for the solution.

One of our most important contribution was ZERO!

So in the 7th century a man known as Brahmagupta, developed the earliest known methods for using zero within calculations, treating it as a number for the first time!

The use of zero was inscribed on the walls of the Chaturbhuj temple in Gwalior, India. Carved into a wall the numbers 270 and 50 can be seen today and have been established as the second oldest recorded zeros in history!

The city of Gwalior was designed so that the gardens around the temple were large enough so that each day the gardens would produce enough flowers to create 50 garlands for the employees of the temple!

What we now call zero in English, Brahmagupta named “shunya” or “sunya”, the Sanskrit word for emptiness or nothingness!

So when you are asked the contribution of India in mathematics and later technology you can proudly say zero! Talking about technology brings into mind this amazing tech show I used to love watching! The best part of that was the birthday celebrity Yash Pal!

Now zero in your bed and sleep!

Shubh ratri!
